autism - keep it or eradicate it?
The title of this blog is alarming to me. I wrote it, yes in response to many posts I have read with differing views on autism and the effects it has on a family.
It is true autism is so far across a spectrum that it would be almost impossible to see all aspects of it. Although maybe this would be a great idea, a whole bunch of families coming together somehow and showing the diversity within autism. This alone would be a great education for those who do not know and for those who wish to.
My personal view on this subject is to keep autism. My reasons for this are: I feel this is an opportunity for humans to evolve in a way we have perhaps not had the opportunity to do before. reawakening our senses, all of them in full. We generally use a tiny percent of our brains, wouldn't it be wonderful to use all of our brains?
For me this is about so many things. Eradicating something on humanity seems like a mistake, as we live as humans we learn and grow each of individually. Across history there have been and still are so many lives living with pain and anguish. War, poverty, suppression, racism, disabilities the list is long. over history to be different has always caused problems and great fear. The knee jerk reaction is to get rid of it. Then we can all feel better.
But it seemed we never did feel better as something else would come along for us to 'deal with' life gives us opportunities to change, move forward, evolve. Being stuck in the same belief system forever isn't healthy for anyone and actually impossible as change happens, it cannot be controlled. The more we resist change the harder lives can be.
I see autism as an opportunity for us to open our hearts even more, really step into possibilities of human experience beyond what we already see, feel, hear and sense. Most people with autism are incredibly sensitive to the environment, their senses are so in tune with the environment and nature.
In my experience with autism, from verbal to non verbal to a person 'stimming' constantly and rocking back and forth, mumbling sounds that to most are meaningless. I have seen that actually it is meaningful. the link below is of a non verbal autistic lady by the name of Amanda:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jchttps
She speaks of her native language, then translates it for the rest of us to understand. This young lady had been put into institutions most of her life, abused and deemed a pointless member of society. Yet she holds so much wisdom. As do we all.
We are thank fully living in a time where communication aids are becoming more accessible to those who are non verbal, which is revealing thoughts and mindsets from those who previously had no voice. Now we are being told truths of beautiful loving minds, hearts and intentions. Without the technology so many people with non verbal autism would be forever locked away within themselves, judged and presumed ill or needing to be cured.
I know first hand the pain and loneliness that autism can sometimes bring. I really do, yet it isn't the autism that does that it is a lack of understanding and the inability to see past the so called 'normal' ways of communicating. We are all having to learn new things everyday. I see Autism as an invitation for us to learn about ourselves firstly, then step into an unknown existence to see how as an individual you can become more than you are. Can we use our minds to communicate? can we see the unseen? many on the autistic spectrum can, the books are full of such information, real information from real people. Eventually the more we all learn and accept, I am guessing those with autism who are currently struggling and are being unheard or unseen and for those family members who too are exhausted with worry and despair will find their language and become enchanted by what they learn about themselves and their autistic family members.
This is human evolution in motion and we are a part of this happening, how we do it, is the key, it will happen anyway. Can we do it with grace and love or will we continue to eradicate anything that doesn't look 'normal' or is a challenge?
